Position Description:

Ideal Candidate Statement:

• Previous clerical, administrative, or dispatching experience;

• Experience in emergency dispatching, law enforcement, &/or emergency-related services is highly desirable;

• Ability to operate a variety of communications and office equipment;

• Poise; alertness; keenness of observation; firmness; tact; reliability; good judgment; and a state of physical and mental health consistent with the ability to perform assigned duties;

• The ability to communicate effectively with others who may be agitated, have an altered state of consciousness, injured, hysterical or angry, and from a variety of socio- economic backgrounds;

• Ability to quickly prioritize and take appropriate actions;

• Ability to minimally meet all Public Safety Dispatcher Selection Requirements as prescribed by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (CA POST ), POST Administrative Manual sections 1956-1960

• Ability to successfully pass the CA POST Public Safety Dispatcher Basic Training within 12 months of employment

Position is 75%, 12 month, classified position.

Salary and benefits prorated for less than 100% position.

Flexible schedule is a must. Must be available for Evening/Swing Shift.

• Entry Level Applicants must submit one of the following:

o Verification of successful completion of the P.O.S.T Dispatcher Academy dated

within two (2) years of application, OR

o Verification of successful completion of the P.O.S.T. Entry Level

Dispatch Selection

Test Battery examination (Education and Experience section). You may also submit “TScore”

documentation (of 50 or higher) from another California Public Agency. The

certification of the examination must be dated within 6 months of the closing date of

this job announcement.

Lateral Applicants must submit documentation of one of the following:

o Possession of a valid State of California Peace Officer Standards and Training

(P.O.S.T.) Dispatcher Basic Certificate; OR

o Currently working as a public safety dispatcher, and can show proof of successful completion of the agency specific

dispatcher training program.

Job Description Summary:

Under the direction of the Chief of Campus Police Services, receive and transmit routine and emergency radio messages and telephone calls from personnel and the public; process and respond to requests from field personnel for information; dispatch police, fire and medical personnel as appropriate; maintain related records and logs; provides general clerical support to the department.

Learn local geography, street locations, important buildings and landmarks of the area.

Learn police, fire and medical organization, operations, radio procedures and dispatch guidelines.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

Complete work with many interruptions.

Operate a computer and assigned software.

Work confidentially with discretion.

Work patiently with individuals who exhibit emotional stress or other demanding situations determining proper course of action.

Respond to radio and telephone calls and perform clerical duties simultaneously.

Essential Duties:

Perform specialized and complex clerical duties involving independent judgment and action within an assigned office and requiring in-depth knowledge of an organization-wide function or program; assist in assuring smooth and efficient office operations.

Receive calls and send radio messages to and from security personnel; route calls and dispatch officers to campus locations; coordinate flow of communications between organizational services to assure appropriate and timely response to local needs and emergencies.

Respond to informational requests from personnel; utilize an assigned computer system to input data and extract information related to incidents and reports; input ticket, appeal and hearing information into an assigned database; establish and maintain automated records as directed.

Maintain various logs concerning daily activities, services dispatched and related information; maintain records related to dispatch activities, incidents and assigned duties; research, compile, prepare and maintain statistics relating to the Jeanne Clery Act.

Operate standard office and dispatch equipment including a telephone, radio system, computer and assigned software.

Communicate with campus administrators, local police, fire, animal control and medical emergency units to exchange information, coordinate activities and resolve issues or concerns; confer with outside fire, police and medical agencies to request and provide assistance and information as needed.

Monitor inventory levels of office supplies; order, receive and maintaining inventory of office supplies. Order and maintain inventory of a variety of materials.

Respond to inquiries and provide general information to the public regarding security services and procedures; issue and distribute keys and parking permits to staff.

OTHER DUTIES :

Perform related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.
